The picturesque town of Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire has lots of small, independent shops. You can walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Bath. Visit the Tythe Barn and the Saxon church. Only 20 minutes drive from The Byres.
Devizes in Wiltshire has its own brewery producing local ales such as 6X and Old Timer and seasonal ales too. Enjoy the Visitors Centre, experience the Brewery Tour and meet the Shire horses which still deliver beer to local pubs in Devizes. The Byres are only a 10 minute drive to the Visitors Centre.. For those interested in the mysterious crop circles, we are ideally situated to visit the places where they appear and also the unofficial crop circle centre in Honeystreet near Pewsey. Some visitors have taken a microflight from Cherhill to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the complicated patterns of these circles. If walking is one of your hobbies, there are many footpaths which criss-cross the county, many of which can be accessed directly from the Byres. You could choose to walk to each of the Wiltshire white chalk horses. Visiting the famous flight of Locks at Caen Hill and continuing to walk in either direction along the Kennet and Avon Canal offers visitors the chance to see how important the canal is (and was in the past) to the economy of the region. It is possible to walk to the famous village of Lacock where many films or TV series have been filmed, including Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice and Cranford. It is equally possible to drive there within 10 minutes and have a more gentle stroll around the village, its sites, shops and the Abbey where Fox Talbot took his first photo. This is detailed in the Fox Talbot museum in the village. A larger stone circle is not to be missed at Avebury where each stone has a tale to tell and you might even catch a glimpse of the Chief Druid whilst you are there. It is possible to walk from Avebury to Silbury Hill and the Long Barrow at Kennet although a short drive could take you there and then on to tea at the Divine café at Cherhill or Polly’s tea-room in one of our oldest towns of Marlborough. The stately homes of Bowood and Longleat and all their attractions are both within easy reach of the Byres particularly Bowood which is only 10 minutes away. The dog show is an important event in June. There is so much to see at Bowood with its adventure play park, superb house and grounds, a golf course and a spa. Malmesbury offers the opportunity to visit the Abbey, founded by Athelstan-from which a monk tried to fly. The small town lies at the edge of the Cotswolds and has a great deal of charm. |
